England

As of October 1st 2020, DEFRA (The Department for Food, the Environment and Rural Affairs) implemented new legislation making it illegal for businesses to either sell or supply the following plastic items in England.

  • Straws
  • Stirrers
  • Cotton Buds

Wales

The Welsh Government have began consultations to outlaw the sale and supply of the following plastic items within Wales:

  • Straws
  • Stirrers
  • Cotton Buds
  • Balloon Sticks
  • Plates & Cutlery
  • Food and Drinks containers made of expanded polystyrene
  • Products made from oxo-degradable plastic; such as certain types of carrier bags

A consultation on the proposals will take place in the coming months; with restrictions intended to come into force in the first half of 2021.

Scotland

The Scottish Government is seeking views on the introduction of new legislation to restrict the sale or commercial supply of the following plastic items:

  • Cutlery (plates, forks, knives, spoons, chopsticks)
  • Straws
  • Stirrers
  • Cotton Buds
  • Balloon Sticks
  • Food containers made of expanded polystyrene
  • Beverage containers made of expanded polystyrene, including their covers and lids
  • All oxo-degradable products
