What began in December has skyrocketed through into March, leaving many converters amazed by yet another round of hefty price increases with the clear expectation of more to come. Whilst it is of limited consolation, it is not just the thermoplastics market that has been caught by supply demand fundamentals that have resulted in tangible shortages of product and price increases, which, so far, have not impinged on demand. For UK buyers the improvement in the value of the GBP against both the Euro and the USD is almost meaningless against the fundamental levels of price inflation that are taking place today. The increase in crude oil price only serves to reinforce the market dynamics.

In the case of Engineering Polymers, many producers have taken the unusual step of refusing further orders, preferring instead to sort out their current backlogs, while making sure that they themselves can secure the feedstocks that they require in order to supply existing orders.

The massive hike in styrene monomer is almost without precedent, and doubtless will have a serious impact on all styrene related polymers.

No doubt the situation will change in due course and with it the likelihood of significant and hefty price reductions; for now the supply situation is likely to remain tight throughout the first half of this year with the clear expectation that along with a wide range of other raw materials, thermoplastics are going to cost a lot of ‘coin’ and in many cases prices will exceed previous highs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Download (PDF)” style=”flat” color=”green” i_icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-arrow-down” add_icon=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.plastribution.co.uk%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F03%2Fmarch-price-know-how.pdf|||”][mk_padding_divider size=”20″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row fullwidth=”true”][vc_column][vc_raw_html]JTVCZGZsaXAlMjBpZCUzRCUyMjY0MTIlMjIlMjAlNUQlNUIlMkZkZmxpcCU1RA==[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]
