New study demonstrates full biodegradation of PE and PP using Polymateria technology

New research from Imperial College London, SIRIM and Polymateria has demonstrated that polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) incorporating Polymateria’s Biotransformation technology can fully biodegrade in the natural environment within two years. The findings are particularly significant because PE and PP are two of the world’s most widely used polymers, found in applications including films, bags, cups, straws and hygiene products.

Tackling plastic that escapes the waste system

An estimated 32% of plastic packaging globally is neither collected nor recycled, meaning a significant proportion can leak into the environment.

While reducing plastic use, improving reuse and increasing recycling remain essential, Polymateria’s technology is designed to provide an additional safeguard for plastic products that may unintentionally escape established waste-management systems.

During the study, plastics incorporating the technology transformed into a bioavailable wax when exposed to environmental conditions. Researchers found no persistent microplastics, with naturally occurring microbes subsequently consuming the wax through biodegradation.

Research at Imperial College London also identified that the microorganisms responsible are commonly found in soils around the world, meaning the process does not rely on specialist industrial composting facilities or unusual environmental conditions.

The biodegradation testing was carried out by SIRIM, Malaysia’s governmental testing and certification body, supporting its SIRIM ECO 098 Ecolabel based on the BSI PAS 9017 standard.

A potential solution for real-world plastic leakage

Polymateria’s Biotransformation technology is already being adopted by brands across Asia, the UK and emerging markets, particularly in applications where plastic leakage presents a significant challenge.

For manufacturers and converters, the technology offers the potential to maintain the performance and practicality of conventional polyolefins while introducing a defined end-of-life mechanism if the material escapes into the environment.
