Antimony trioxide: What is it?

Antimony trioxide is a compound used in many polymers with flame-retardant properties.

In September 2024, China decided to implement export controls on antimony trioxide, introducing significant challenges to global supply chains. This strategic move, designed to prioritise national interests in critical sectors like defense and renewable energy, has directly affected key industries in the UK, including sectors such as electronics, automotive and some special plastics.

How might this affect Plastribution customers?

This may affect the availability of certain flame retardant grades for our customers. Rest assured, our team is already exploring various alternative suppliers and options to mitigate any potential disruptions going forward.

The ban, which accounts for 75% – 80% of global production in China, is already causing shortages and increased prices across various sectors. Given the extensive use of antimony trioxide in flame retardant polymer applications, there may be some supply interruptions, depending on how long the export controls remain in place.

Whilst it is important for Plastribution to advise you of these challenges, we expect to be able to offer anyone potentially affected with alternative solutions. For instance, the adoption of halogen-free flame retardants or alternative polymer types could serve as viable alternatives in many applications.
